Modest doubt: these are not terms heard in today’s everyday language today, but they are nevertheless timeless and relevant five centuries later.
Just as Hector wisely explored his doubts and warned his fellow Trojans against waging war against the Greeks in Troilus and Cressida, we too must constantly respond to the uncertainties of our modern world. Whether we are confronted by artificial intelligence, global pandemics, national security threats, climate change and disinformation, we must incorporate the notion of uncertainty into risk analysis for individual and policy decisions. It is this interpretation of modest doubt that we will explore during the 2023 Society for Risk Analysis Annual Meeting.
Through various pedagogies, risk analysts help bound uncertainty in both individual and public policy decision-making and provide sober expectations of what types of gains and losses might realistically be elicited from an endeavor. During the 2023 SRA Annual Meeting, each session will have a thread of doubt interwoven and applied to various situations across diverse industries and population segments. You will explore how the methodology of applied uncertainty can lead to uncovered mitigating factors, enhanced risk strategies and positive outcomes. In short, you will see how modest doubt continues to be the “beacon of the wise” in the twenty-first century.
